We shouldn’t really get anxious! Aware yes, but anxious no!
The emotion behind anxiety is fear. Fear is good. At least, it’s good when it’s really necessary.
So you’re dawdling along the pavement and decide to cross the road. You step off the pavement straight in front of a car doing 40 mph. You don’t stand there saying to yourself: ”Oh God there’s a car coming”! You find yourself back on the pavement…without thinking. That’s REAL fear and that’s good!
Real fear’s not the problem: it’s the system working as it should…it’s keeping us safe when our life’s in danger. Most of you will recognise this as the “fight or flight mechanism”.
But ask yourself: “how often is your life in danger today”? The answer for most of us: never or maybe once or twice in a lifetime. So why are we constantly firing off the fight or flight mechanism day in day out?
The answer is the two most dangerous words in the English language when put together: “What if…?” Whatever comes next is always negative and 9 times out of 10 won’t happen anyway. A “what if” scenario is by definition not real: it’s pure imagination. It’s False Fear and yet look how it makes us suffer. Why?
The problem is that the Unconscious (91% of your mind and how you create your moment by moment reality) doesn’t know the difference between reality and imagination! What? The Unconscious does not know the difference between what you’re imagining and what’s really happening. The Conscious of course does but it’s only 9%. Look at panic attacks and fears and phobias: they’re not real…although try telling that to somebody who suffers from them!
So false fear, or anxiety, does not serve us. Unlike our cavemen ancestors, our lives are no longer constantly in danger. Given time (millions of years!) evolution would sort this out for us!
However this is definitely one area us clever human beings can short circuit evolution! At The Mark Newey Method, we teach people how they’re Unconscious works, how they’re creating the anxious reality they don’t want and empower them to sort it out. No more constant anxiety.
