Whilst there is obviously a huge hormonal element to depression (can’t get off the sofa…I know I’ve been there!), it is not likely to be what starts off the descent into lethargy and negativity; that comes later.
In fact, wait for this: the hormonal imbalance theory of depression has never been scientifically proven. Yes you read that correctly! Which of course begs the question as to why we’re handing out all of these tablets, which people can get stuck on for years…precisely because they don’t solve the problem; it’s another classic case of the medical profession treating the symptom not the cause!
I believe that depression does not come out of the blue…pardon the pun! Events in life tend to bring it on…losing a loved one, getting divorced, falling out with friends at school. Some of these events may not be instantaneous, they may take a while to develop. We may gradually feel unpopular or excluded. We may also gradually realise that we’re stuck in a job we hate, but don’t know what to do about it. It may gradually dawn on us that the road or the town we live in is horrible!
But whether the negative event comes on immediately or gradually, the result in terms of faulty thinking is the same. The problem is that when this faulty thinking becomes constantly repeated, it becomes programmed into our Unconscious. When it becomes programmed in, it becomes our reality….even though it isn’t true!
Depression is defined by the words: useless, worthless and hopeless. As we withdraw from society, this is what we start to believe ourselves to be: that we’re useless and worthless…that we’re unlovable and that we’re in a hopeless situation…and that’s a trap! It’s also not true: nobody is useless, worthless and hopeless: it’s simply not true.
The problem is that if the voice in our head (the Unconscious) is constantly telling is that… then that’s what we come to believe…and if we believe it…it becomes true (in our reality) even though it isn’t. Our mind seeks out examples of proof to back up the false programming: somebody laughs at us (or that’s how we interpret it); we mess something up at work (actually we mess it up because we can’t concentrate properly due to the negative thinking); we see somebody who we thought fancied us with another person…and so on! Those things are not proof, but that’s how we see it and this sends us deeper into the spiral.
At The Mark Newey Method, we teach people how they’ve arrived at this false negative reality, how the depression is created by negative beliefs about themselves and we empower them to change their thinking and fight off the feelings of negativity and lethargy. And the great thing is that once our clients have fought their way out of the negative spiral, they are equipped to take action should they begin to fall into it again: they will recognise what’s happening right up front. It simply isn’t true when your doctor tells you that once you’ve had depression, that it will always be in your life…well it will if you only treat the symptoms!!!
